Biblical Allusions
In Chapter 18 there were not as many biblical allusions as the handout had shown, unless I do not know my bible that well. It was actually hard to find biblical allusions in this chapter than in the other chapters. However, I was able to find some allusions of my own and some similar to the handout. Some biblical allusions mentioned in Chapter 18 are when Petra Cotes helps the Buendia with food because they were suffering. Jesus provided for the Israelites when they had no food. Another parallel example is Aureliano II wanting to know more about the prophecies, wanting to know excessive knowledge. There is also an incident where Melquiades comes back to help Aureliano just like how Jesus came back after his death. I believe another Biblical allusion shown in the book is Melquiades being a helper to those who want to know more just as Jesus showed those who wanted to know him. Another example is when Jose Arcadio was betrayed by the 4 children and they stole from him for gold though they ate and drank together. This example is shown in the bible when Judas betrays Jesus though they also feasted together. These are the ones I have discovered from reading chapter 18.
1. What comes to mind to why Marquez used such connections is quite confusing and I am not sure if it makes sense. I think the Author used connections in the bible to show the reader that the events in the Bible are a bit unusual but real at the same time and can occur in a fantastical way. I also think he made connections so that he can let the reader know that Magical Realism is seen everywhere. Also maybe because he wanted us to know that there are events that can seem unusual but can be possible. Or maybe he could have also done this because he wanted to show the reader that his book is not the only thing that has allusions as such. Lastly maybe because since there are very limited of people who read the bible, he used it in this book. These are my reasons for why the author made connections to the novel.
2. I honestly do believe there is a reason for everything. So I do believe there is an underlying message because why else would he use connections with the Bible? I believe the underlying message could be that Marquez wanted people to notice such events that occurred in the book happened similarly in the Bible. For those who do not read the bible can read this and have an idea of what the bible has. Or because the bible has interesting and uniqueness in it. However, Marquez put his uniqueness in a way that would amuse the reader and add some more unusual creative spin to it because the events in the bible were real but the ones in the book were not. Those are my ideas of what I thought the underlying message was or is.

I. Magical Realism
- - “ …No one felt sleepy at bedtime and they realized that they had gone more than fifty hours without sleeping…They had indeed contracted the illness of insomnia.” This is magical realism because it is something that keeps occurring.
II. Characters
- - Jose Arcadia Buendia- Still crazy, but manages to help village during the plague
- Amaranta- small girl playful
- Ursula- is somewhat in denial at some point during the stage of insomnia, loses memory
- Aureliano-Grown, mature man, still into science
- Rebeca- 11 year old girl who barely speaks, sick
- Arcadio- small child, playful
- Melquiades- dies than comes back to life with new invention
- Don Apolinar Moscote-someone from the government
III. Plot Summary
- Jose Arcadio’s son was born and was named Arcadio. A girl named Rebeca who is apparently the daughter of one of Ursula’s and Jose Arcadia Buendia’s relatives. As she arrives to the house, she has a bag of her parents’ bones. So they take care of her and discover that she does not eat. So Ursula does some intensity to get Rebeca to eat. Eventually Rebeca comes to her senses but then they find out another problem. They find out that she can not sleep, they find out she has insomnia, and brings it to the whole family. Eventually the family is affected by the illness and then it soon results in ‘loss in memory.’ Unfortunately, the whole town is affected by insomnia and Jose Arcadia Buendia tries to help them continue living how they did before by labeling things around the town. Soon the gypsy, Melquiades comes back with a new invention which is a camera. Later, a man called Don Apolinar Moscote comes to the village. Don Apolinar Moscote and Jose Arcadia are enemies but Moscote is invited to stay in the household.
IV. Quotes
- “That way we can get more out of life.” I like this quote because if you actually think about it, if we all were not sleepy, or even want t sleep, we would get so much done because of all the time we would have.
- “ And so that you know it once and for all, we don’t need any judges here because there’s nothing that needs judging.” I really like this quote because where and who in this world does not judge what goes on in this world? It would be so nice if we did not judge.
V. Themes
1. Illness- illness plays in this chapter because the whole village is affected by the illness insomnia which leads to loss of memory.
2. Magical Realism- This is played in the part of insomnia, Rebeca comes with it and then it affects the whole village.
3. Dislike- Don Apolinar Moscote comes to the village and Jose Arcadia Buendia thinks of him as an enemies.

I think this is Magical realism because this shows supernatural things in the real world.
II. Characters
Jose Arcadia Buendia- Appears to be less insane with inventions.
1. Ursula Iguaran- Paranoid about having sex and having kids
2. Jose Arcadio- Falls in love and abandons his first lover for a gypsy
3. Aureliano- Helps Jose Arcadia Buendia in the study of mirror walls.
4. Prudencio Aguilar- Cock fighter, a ghost who haunts Jose Arcadia Buendia and Ursula.
5. Pilar Ternera- Jose Arcadio’s first lover, local woman, who seduces Jose Arcadio and eventually Jose, gets her pregnant.
6. Amaranta- Jose Arcadia Buendia and Ursula’s daughter, was abandoned by Ursula to follow gypsies
III. Plot Summary
- Chapter two starts out with the story of Jose Arcadia Buendia discovering Macondo and the story of Ursula’s great-great grandmother. Jose and Ursula met in Macondo and got married there. The two were cousins. When they got married, Ursula did not want to have kids because she feared that her kids would have a deformity. So in fear of being raped, she wore Chastity pants that her grandma made to protect her. The village people laughed at Jose Arcadia Buendia, and one of the villagers Prudencio Aguilar insulted him and they went into a cock fight. Jose Arcadia killed him in the cock fight and was then congratulated. Jose told Ursula in a threat manner to remove the underpants and Ursula murmured that he is responsible for anything bad that happens. A few months later, Ursula begins to see the ghost of Prudencio Aguilar. Eventually after the family had been haunted, the two decided to go far away to leave Aguilar. Later Jose Arcadio finds Pilar Ternera and he gets her pregnant, then Arcadio runs away with a gypsy. Ursula goes to follow the gypsies and when she returns, she finds two routes to the outside world.
IV. Quotes
-“This just means that we can’t stand the weight of our conscience.” Pg. 22
I liked the quote because sometimes it’s true that the weight of our conscience is too much, you sometimes don’t know what to believe when your conscience is trying to talk to you. I like this because it is true and I can relate to the quote.
- “If you bear iguanas, we’ll raise iguanas.” I also like this because Jose seems to be a real man. A lot of men today would leave their wife or girlfriend if they got a child that was deformed. To me, this quote is sweet.
V. Themes
1. Fear- Fear plays in this chapter when Ursula marries Jose but is afraid to have sex and get pregnant in fear of having a deformed child.
2. Anger which leads to death- Anger plays in this because Prudencio angers Jose by insulting him then both have a cock fight and Prudencio is killed
3. Lust- Lust plays a role in the novel as Arcadio lust for a local villager then over a gypsy.

Chapter 1
I. Elements of Magical Realism
-“He survived pellagra in Persia, scurvy in the Malayan archipelago, leprosy in Alexandria, beriberi in Japan, bubonic plague in Madagascar, an earthquake in Sicily, and a disastrous shipwreck in the Strait of Magellan.” This is an element of Magical Realism because it would be crazy for someone to survive all these things but on the other hand it is very possible because anything is possible.
II. Characters
1. Colonel Aureliano Buendia- Son of Jose Arcadia Buendia, adventurous
2. Melquiades-The gypsy leader who brings amazing inventions to the village. He soon becomes Jose Arcadia’s friend and inspires him with his inventions.
3. Jose Arcadia Buendia- Was always thinking outside the box. Soon he becomes inspired to dig deeper into scientific study and knowledge.
4. Ursula Iguaran- Wife to Jose Arcadia Buendia, thinks husband is insane, speaks her mind, devoted mother
5. Jose Arcadio-Son to Ursula and Jose Arcadia Buendia, same physical strength and same impulse for growth as his father, but not the imagination. Eldest son.
6. Aureliano- silent and withdrawn, more adventurous than Arcadio.
III. Plot Summary
- The first starts out with gypsies would get together and show their inventions, such as magnets, magnifying glasses, and telescopes. One of the main gypsies is called Melquiades. Jose Arcadia Buendia decides to do scientific study and discovers something big. He discovers that the world is round like an orange which causes his wife Ursula and the village to think he is insane. Jose Arcadia Buendia thinks that Macondo should come to contact with the outside world, so then he decides to look for a path to the sea. Not really able to find anything, he goes back home and says that Macondo is surrounded by water. So then Jose Arcadia Buendia wants to move the village to a less isolated place but the wife refuses and convinces the rest of the woman that it is a bad idea also. Jose Arcadia then teaches his the children Jose Arcadio and Aurliano how to read and write. One day, Jose Arcadia Buendia takes his sons to a gypsy fair and all of them saw ice for the first time. All of them were just amazed.
IV. Quotes
- “The main thing is not to lose our bearings.” Pg. 11 What jumped out at me about this quote is that a lot of us today ‘lose our bearings’ when we get confused or if we are discriminated in any way and so, it is important not to lose our bearings, in such cases.
- “Things have a life of their own.” Pg. 1-2 I liked this quote because I also believe things have a life of their own. Everyone and a lot of things are different and unique in its own way. But I also think the quote should have been “people have a life of their own.”
V. Themes
1. Past generation names- This is played out in chapter one because of how the names are passed down to people. For example, Jose Arcadia Buendia and his son Jose Arcadio have the same names.
2. Inventions- Gypsies have come in in chapter one to show their inventions to the village. There were such inventions like magnets, telescopes, and magnifying glasses. This inspired Jose Arcadia Buendia to invent things of his own and study more about the world.
3. Insanity- Jose Arcadia Buendia from the beginning of chapter 1 was thought to be insane because of his theory of the world being round like an orange.

The case for the Defense of to Kill a Mockingbird
To kill a mockingbird is about racial injustice and deaths that occurred to innocent people during the great depression. Learning about racial injustice and people’s lives being taken away, is not something that you can just learn about in school and have the same effect as a book would give to the audience. To kill a Mockingbird should not be banned for three reasons: 1. it informs and expands the reader’s knowledge of real life events that occurred between the blacks and whites 2. You’re able to learn about parts of what was reality in the south and lastly, 3. Learn more and emphasize about how racial injustice and the killing of innocence which was expressed greatly in the book.
The reader is enlightened on the issue such as social class that occurred in To Kill a Mockingbird. The blacks were the lowest class in the south and the whites, whether rich or poor they were always superior to the blacks who were treated inhuman. While reading the book, the reader can experience the kind of treatment blacks had. Also, because of the issue of class, the reader learns how that really had a huge impact on why blacks were treated the way they were.
Reality was, that innocent blacks were killed daily because whites accused them for things they did not do. If people were not allowed to read books such as To Kill a Mockingbird to help get the truth across who would have known innocent people were dying, and why they were dying? Being able to understand the truth makes a big difference in the sense that you’re not guessing and making your own assumptions on what occurred during the great depression.
Lastly, reading the book gives great details that a teacher could not have expressed about racial injustice and destruction of the innocent. Being able to go into great details really helps the reader understand better about things that occurred and the reader is able to accentuate certain events that happened during the great depression.
To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned because the truth should be heard/ read. It is good to know about events that happened between blacks and whites that were hardly expressed. The reader is able to development growth of the human races. Banning the book is not really protecting the reader from anything in scene in the book or the languages that are expressed because somehow the reader can come across and experience racism and vague language.

Relationship between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza
First of all, the relationship between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza is that they are neighbors. Don Quixote is the knight and Sancho Panza is Don Quixote’s squire. Sancho Panza is poor and Quixote is slightly wealthier. Don Quixote is more of an illusionist and Panza is more of a realist. Both believing in two different things actually complement each other. They complement each other in the sense that one another need each other to make this an adventure. For example, Don Quixote’s illusions can bring the excitement in the adventure, such as thinking there are ‘giants’ right in front of you when they are actually ‘windmills’ can bring adventure and bring about a great imagination span. But then there is reality where there is actually something enormous that makes the adventure even better. Once you think about it, Sancho Panza is also an illusionist. He is an illusionist too because he also thinks in these adventures and actually thinks he is going to get an island and be the governor of it. But the one who is most delusional is Don Quixote because he actually thinks that an inn is a castle and windmills are giants and that he is a knight. I guess it is true when they say opposites attract in this case that is. Usually it would drive a realist crazy if one person was always an illusionist and never came in to reality not even once. I mean once you release something was not always how they seemed like in your imagination, than what? How do you continue from there if you are so used to illusions all the time?

Journal entry
I think that the night before the battle, Roland would most probably think about ideas for what he would do if by any chance, he and his team were captured by the Muslims. I don’t think that he was actually thinking he would not blow his horn if they team was in trouble but I do think that he wanted to come back as a hero, and feel like the reason that he and few of his members came back alive was all because of him. I think he felt that he was going to beat this people and come back to all the glory for himself. Basically I think that Roland was mainly thinking about himself and how he was going to be a hero. If this is the case, than Roland was a selfish person who didn’t care about anything way past himself and other people’s safety. I also don’t think that teamwork was in his mind either; I think it was about him alone fighting this battle. Maybe he was not all that selfish. Maybe he prayed for his army’s safety at some point while thinking, but I think that he was mainly thinking about himself. These are my thoughts.

literature
I. The quality that I believe is most valuable is ‘the ability to make sure that the whole team functions smoothly as a unit because being an example does not always influence other people the way one has it set up to be. Having the ability to get a unit in order and run smoothly is more effective because you have the strength to help get people together even maybe with the differences they have but can still work smoothly as a team.
II.
• Someone who is able to guide its people during hard times and get them out of hard times
• Focused with what they do
• Ability to help the country grow
• Strong mentally (positive attitude)
• Educated/smart
• Humble
• Self less, not prideful
• Turns to God for help
III. Am not sure that Roland is the leader that has all of the attributes that I displayed in the list above. I say this because the way I’ve understand the story, Instead of doing what was best for his team to protect them, his pride was what got him and the team caught during the battle. A prideful leader can really mess things up because of maybe reputation and not using your brain. Even though just about to die he actually prayed for his peers. The point that I was getting at when he prayed for his peers is that in his prayer he did not only think of himself while praying but even for those around him. But having only one good quality out of all the rest, does not consider him a good leader. I also don’t think that Roland meets the first bullet on the list above because he was not able to guide his people during hard times instead he failed to get his people out of the difficult times.
