Active Reading Journal #11

I. Magical Realism- “ …The house shook with a healthy earthquake.” Pg. 216 this is Magical Realism because we don’t experience “healthy earthquakes” but destructive.
II. Characters
-Fernanda- Religious and arrogant
- Aureliano Segundo- Selfish and obsessed
- Petra Cotes- Inoccent
- Colonial Aureliano Buendia- Still shuts out anything to do with politics, a bit mean.
- Aureliano Triste- Nice to help his family out
III. Plot Summary-
- We learn about where Fernanda came from which is Madagascar. All her life, she was to believe that she was the best above all. Aureliano Segundo was so in love with her that he even abandoned Petra Cotes. The two are very different people. Fernanda is more of a religious woman and Aureliano is more into pleasure. Aureliano continues to sleep with Petra so that he could keep his wealth. Aureliano Segundo and Fernanda get married and have two children. The president of Moncado honors Colonial Aureliano but he does not accept it.
IV. Quotes
–“She’s different” Pg. 206 That is nice to hear that a girl is different.
_ “We’re becoming people of quality.” Pg. 212 I like this is a good thing they have confidence in themselves.

V. Themes
1. Obsession- Aureliano Segundo falls so in love with Fernanda del Carpio that he evens follows her to keep her from leaving.
2. Selfishness- Aureliano Segundo continues to sleep with Petra for the wealth that the animals are giving him when he does not even love her.
3. Arrogant- Colonial Aureliano is being very stubborn at not wanting to communicate with other people and instead he is being rude to people.
