Active Reading Journal #12

I. Magical Realism
- “It was so deep in his body that the cracks in his skull did not give off blood but an amber- colored oil that was impregnated with that secret perfume…” Pg. 233 This is Magical Realism because in events such as these, people don’t fall from a roof and not bleed.
II. Characters
- Remedios the Beauty- Acts like a child, unaware of things happening around her.
- Aureliano Buendia- Becomes depressed because he loses his sons. Wanted to start another war.
- Colonial Gerineldo- loyal to Aureliano Buendia
- Ursula- is still concerned about her children; devoted

III. Plot Summary
- New Technology comes to Macondo and the people don’t really know how to react with them. Macondo is also growing more and more daily. A new banana plantation is started by white men. Remedios the Beauty becomes unaware that her beauty is torturing men and also killing them literally. People are actually dying for her. Remedios does not want to get involved in any relationship with a man. Later in the story, she apparently goes to heaven and is never seen again. Macondo becomes a violent place again after the white people set up a police force in front of the banana plantation. Colonial Aureliano Buendia threatens to start another war but it ended badly. All his sons are killed but one. Colonial Aureliano becomes very depressed and Colonial Gerineldo tries to take up the position to start another war but is rejected
Quotes
-“Keep your eyes wide open.” Pg. 230 it is always good to be aware.
-“There’s a lot of cooking, a lot of sweeping, a lot of suffering over little things beyond what we think.” Pg. 234 I like this quote because I personally can relate to it.
IV. Themes

1. Insanity- Men dying over Remedios the Beauty just to see her once.
2. Depression- Aureliano falls into depression because all his sons die but one of them.
3. Loyalty- Colonial Gerineldo volunteering to take Aureliano Buendia position and start a war
