I. Elements of Magical Realism
-“The only thing missing is for him to make chairs rock by simply looking at them.” Pg. 150. This is Magical Realism because you can’t make chairs rock by looking at them.
II. Characters
1. Colonial Aureliano Buendia- A bit stubborn to sign a peace treaty with the conservative party.
2. Amaranta- Lonely, a tease to Aureliano Jose, Acting a bit childish to Aureliano instead she just ignores him.
3. Aureliano Jose- Loves his aunt Amaranta, passionate about her. Sacrificial for love.
4. Jose Raquel Moncada- A conservative soldier but good friend’s wit Colonial Aureliano Buendia
5. Ursula- Supportive and still strong
III. Plot Summary
- Aureliano Jose becomes a mature man and begins to fall for Amaranta. The two sleep naked together but they do not sleep together. However, Amaranta and Aureliano Jose almost kiss but Amaranta stops anything from going far. Eventually Aureliano Jose joins the army and the liberals and conservative sign a peace treaty. However, Colonial Aureliano Buendia does not accept the agreement and flees the country with Aureliano Jose. He travels the Caribbean and gets people to support the liberals. Leaving the army, Aureliano Jose returns home and is expecting to marry Amaranta. Amaranta ignores Aureliano Jose and he is killed by a conservative soldier because of the act of civil obedience. All the sons of Aureliano Buendia are baptized and all given the name Aureliano. Jose Raquel Moncada is ordered to be put to death and Aureliano Buendia refuses because of their friendship.
IV. Quotes
-“I always thought a lot about you.” Pg. 147 This quote is sweet and touching to me.
-“Long live the Liberal party.” Pg. 154. He has so much passion for what he believes in.
V. Themes
1. Immorality- Aureliano Jose and Amaranta sleep naked together and Aureliano Jose wants to marry her.
2. Death- Aureliano Jose is killed by a conservative party.
3. Immaturity- Amaranta does not talk to Aureliano Jose about the things that happen between them but instead ignores him.
