Active Reading Journal #19

I. Elements of Magical Realism
-“… he got undressed in the small reception room and ran through the house balancing a bottle of beer on his inconceivable maleness.” Pg. 389 This is magical realism because you can’t balance a beer bottle on maleness. We’ll it seems impossible.
Characters
1. Amaranta Ursula- falls in love with her nephew
2. Gaston- Belgian
3. Aureliano Bailonia- is Amaranta’s lover
4. Pilnar Ternera-

II. Plot Summary
- Amaranta Ursula returns to Maondo with a new man called Gaston. The people of Macondo don’t recognize the Buendia family as they used to. Aureliano falls in love with Amarant Ursula. Pilnar Ternera and Aureliano have a talk and she gives him a prostitute. Gaston becomes bored of Macondo and he realizes that Aureliano loves Amaranta Ursula. He also gets occupied with creating his own airmail. The two, Aureliano and Amaranta Ursula become lovers. The two have an affair.

III. Quotes
- “Good Lord.” Pg 377 I like this quote because the Lord is good though in that particular sense, it was not emphasizing that the Lord was good.
- “Wherever she is right now, she’s waiting for you” pg 396 This quote is so adorable and cute. We tend o tell our friends that there is someone special waiting for you, and that is what keeps us going daily.

IV. Themes
1. Incest- Aureliano and Amaranta Ursula for eachother and she is his aunt
2. Old age- Pilnar Ternera is still around though she has aged.
3. Boredom- Gaston becomes bored with macondo
