III. Plot Summary
-This chapter is about how the family has grown up some more and people are falling in love. Amaranta and Rebeca are both in love with a guy called Pietro Crespi but Pietro likes Rebeca and are going to get married. However, Amaranta will not allow it and is so heart broken. Both get really sick over his guy because they like him so much. Eventually, the gypsy dies and is the first one to die. Jose Arcadia makes a tomb grave for him with his name engraved. Aureliano teaches Remedios how to read and the two get close. Pilar Ternera becomes pregnant again with Aureliano’s child. Jose Arcadia Buendia sees the ghost Pudencio Aguilar again and talks to him, and then he goes totally crazy wanting to burn down the house and the laboratory. Twenty men had restrain Jose from doing that crazy act by tying to a tree and beating him. Ursula puts him a place where he remains there until he can calm down.
Quotes
-“love is a disease” pg. 68 I like this quote because I think it true that love is a disease. Once you’re affected by it, it takes a long time to recover from it.
- “Get those bad thoughts out of your head,” he told her. You’re going to be happy.” Pg. 75. What stands out about this quote is that when we go through a stage of bad things, a lot of us have bad thoughts a lot without thinking that we are going to be happy in the long run. This quote is very deep.
IV. Themes

1. Love- Amaranta and Rebeca are in love with Pietro, and Aureliano is in love with Remedios.
2. Heartbreak- Pietro likes Rebeca not Amaranta and the two are going to get married, but Amaranta had refused and was so sad she got sick.
3. Death- Melquiades is the first to die in Macondo.
