Active Reading Journal#9

I. Elements of Magical Realism
-“ … Wondering why it was taking so long to boil, and found it full of worms.” Pg. 178…Milk cannot turn into worms.

II. Characters

1. Colonial Aureliano Buendia- Loses faith in the war.
2. Ursula- Stays strong for the family
3. Amaranta- Continues to reject the love of Marquez still scared of being with someone.
4. Colonel Gerineldo Márquez- Also loses faith in war. Still is passionate about Amaranta. Tries to kill himself but survives.
5. Santa Sofia de la Piedad- quiet never contradicts anymore, the condescending one.



II. Plot Summary
- Aureliano Buendia and Gerineldo Marquez lose faith in the purpose of the war after Jose Raquel Moncada was executed. They both realize that the liberal party is quite corrupt and faithless. Gerineldo still in love with Amaranta tries to continues to declare his love for her but she continues to push him away. Gerineldo was eventually condemned to death but he was freed. Gerineldo convinces the Liberals to end the war and after that, he feels like that he has betrayed the party. It took about two years for him to make peace with the conservative party and liberal party. Feeling that way, he tries to kill himself but he survives. Ursula tries to restores the household and makes the house look nice again.

III. Quotes
-“ How strange men are.” Pg. 162 I really like this quote because it’s so true. Men are really strange but in a unique way.
-“Watch out for your heart...” pg. 165. This is the most inspiring quote. If someone could tell me that before making a big mistake, it would really help me.


IV. Themes
1. Passion- Colonial Gerineldo Marquez has so much love for Amaranta that he won’t stop until he had her.
2. The effect of Death on people- The death of Moncada had effected Aureliano Buendia and Gerineldo Marquez. The two lost the faith in the war that was going on and realized how bad the party was becoming.
3. Rejection- Amaranta continues to reject the love of Gerineldo Marquez
