Active Reading Journal #5

I. Magical Realism
- “Under a bright noonday sun in the gulf of Bengal his ship had killed a sea dragon, in the stomach of which they found the helmet, the buckles, and the weapons of a Crusader.” Pg. 90 This is Magical realism because there are no sea dragon and the fact that that they all killed the dragon seems unreal.
II. Characters
- Remedios- Becomes very responsible but than dies.
- Aureliano- Sad and heartbroken, then becomes an Official
- Rebeca- Lust for Jose Arcadia and leaves Pietro high and dry.
- Amaranta-Gets a chance to be with Pietro, and before , she started to realize that Pietro and Rebeca were going to get married.
- Jose Arcadio- comes back even more rude and ridiculous, has tattoos, and is buff.
- Jose Arcadia Buendia- Has calmed down a bit.

III. Plot Summary
- Aureliano and Remedios got married on a Sunday in March. Remedios went through puberty before becoming mature, but became very responsible. She takes in the son of Aureliano and Pilar Ternera. However, Remedios dies. Aureliano is so heartbroken and sad. Rebeca and Pietro push there wedding because it is a sad time. Jose Arcadio comes back to the house all changed and different looking. Rebeca falls for him and they end up getting married. Ursula was so upset that she banned them from the house. Pietro and Amaranta now start to get close. After the death f Remedios, Aureliano becomes an official and they go to war.
Quotes
-“Because I’m crazy” Pg.83 This quote shows me that Jose Arcadia Buendia is able to realize that he is crazy.
-“It’s never good to be hasty in things.” Pg 94 this quote is so true. It is not good to be quick in things because than how will you understand things and meditate in thngs? We need to go at a good speed.
IV. Themes

1. Heartbreak-Remedios dies and everyone is sad.
2. Lust- Jose Arcadio comes back a new man and Rebeca falls for him while she was with Pietro and have an affair .
3. Anger- Ursula is angry for what Jose Arcadio and Rebeca had done that she banned them from the house.
